Tim Layden gave up an eleventh inning run that cost Daytona in their 7-6 loss to Tampa. The loss drops him to 1-2 on the season although he had help because Jeff Samardzija wasn’t all that great in his start. He gave up five runs in just five innings and his ERA is still north of 5.00 this year and he has yet to pick up his first win.
Brian Dopirak was the hitting star in the loss. He went three for five with a double, a homerun, two RBIs and a run.
Daytona scored a grand total of two runs in a doubleheader against Palm Beach and as expected, they lost them both. The first game was actually close because Mitch Atkins threw a solid game. He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in seven innings. Yusuf Carter had the only extra base hit for the Cubs with a double in the 2-1 loss.
Game two was a 6-1 loss. Darin Downs was shelled for three runs in two innings and he dropped to 2-2 on the season. Brian Dopirak drew two walks and he scored the only run of the game for the Cubs.
Daytona beat Dunedin 9-5 and Matt Matulia led the way for the Cubs at the plate. He went three for four with an RBI and two runs. Alan Rick hit a solo homerun and Brian Dopirak went three for three with a double and an RBI.
Jon Mueller improved to 5-1 with some solid relief. He gave up one run on two hits with a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.
Jeff Samardzija was roughed up for the second time in his last three starts as Brevard County hitters took it to him in a 13-4 loss. He dropped to 0-5 on the season and he gave up eight runs on ten hits and one walk with one strikeout in five innings.
Brian Dopirak provided most of the offense in the loss. He homered and drove in three of the four runs.
Daytona didn’t do much at the plate in a 5-1 loss to Brevard County. Nate Spears drove in the only run for the Cubs and Brian Dopirak went two for three with a walk and a run.
Scott Koerber dropped to 2-3 with a tough start. He gave up five runs (four earned) on eleven hits and two hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Jesse Estrada improved to 1-1 on the season with a nice start against Fort Myers. He gave up one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven solid innings.

A pretty good start by Jeff Samardzija went to waste in the Cubs 2-1 loss to Fort Myers. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings.
Brian Dopirak had the only extra base hit of the game for the Cubs. He doubled and he also drove in the only run.
Daytona topped Jupiter 5-1 and the Cubs got some great relief pitching. Joel Santo and Darin Downs combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings and they struck out eight.
Brian Dopirik went two for four with a homerun and two RBIs. Tyler Colvin tripled and he drove in two runs.
Chris Robinson led the way for the Smokies at the plate with a big two run homer in their 6-5 win. Brian Dopirak also went yard with a solo shot and Matt Craig finished with three hits.
Mark Holliman had a very nice start. He gave up just a single run on three hits and two hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.
The Smokies couldn’t put a single run across the plate despite getting seven hits. Brian Dopirak had three of those hits and Joseph Simokaitis had two hits and the only extra base hit for the Smokies (a double).
Donald Veal was roughed up in his start. He gave up five runs on six hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Third baseman Matt Craig singled twice, scored and drove in two in the Smokies 3-1 win over Jacksonville. Brian Dopirak also singled twice while Gary Cates doubled and drove in a run.
Sean Gallagher picked up the win with 5 2/3 solid innings. He gave up just four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
