The Smokies lost game one of their championship series to Huntsville 8-7. Mitch Atkins gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings but he didn’t even take the loss because of all the offense. That loss went to Jesse Estrada, who gave up two unearned runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
Casey McGehee went two for five with a three run homer to give the Smokies a boost. Tyler Colvin doubled twice, drove in a run and scored once.
Daytona shut out the Flying Tigers 4-0 and it was Mitch Atkins who got it done on the mound. He gave up four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in seven shutout innings and the win pushed his record to 7-6 on the season.
Yusuf Carter was the hitting star. He went two for four with a homerun and two RBIs.
Daytona scored a grand total of two runs in a doubleheader against Palm Beach and as expected, they lost them both. The first game was actually close because Mitch Atkins threw a solid game. He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in seven innings. Yusuf Carter had the only extra base hit for the Cubs with a double in the 2-1 loss.
Game two was a 6-1 loss. Darin Downs was shelled for three runs in two innings and he dropped to 2-2 on the season. Brian Dopirak drew two walks and he scored the only run of the game for the Cubs.
Mitch Atkins improved to 5-3 on the season with a nice start in Daytona’s 11-1 win over Clearwater. He gave up just one run on six hits and a walk with four strikouts in six innings of work.
Tyler Colvin went two for five with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs. It was his fifth homerun for Daytona. Alan Rick went one for four with a double, three RBIs and a run.
Mitch Atkins improved to 4-3 on the season with a nice start in Daytona’s 7-1 win over Brevard County. He gave up five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in six shutout innings.
Jeff Culpepper was the hitting star in the win. He went three for five with three RBIs and a run.
Daytona shutout Fort Myers 3-0 and Mitch Atkins improved to 3-3 with a very nice start. He gave up just two hits with three strikeouts in eight shutout innings.
Chris Amador was the hitting star in the win. He went two for five with a double, a run and an RBI.
Daytona was shut down in their 6-1 loss to Sarasota. The only run of the game for the Cubs came on a solo homerun by Kyle Reynolds.
Mitch Atkins gave up three runs on eleven hits and one walk with a strikeout in six innings of work. The loss drops him to 2-3 on the season.
The Cubs didn’t get much offense in their 2-0 shutout loss to Vero Beach. Ryan Norwood had two of the five hits while Matt Matulia tripled.
A really good start by Mitch Atkins went to waste in the loss. He gave up one unearned run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Tyler Colvin had a big day at the plate in Daytona’s 9-5 win over Palm Beach. He went three for five with a double, four RBIs and a run. Nate Spears went two for two with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.
Mitch Atkins improved to 2-1 with a solid start. He gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Mitch Atkins gave up just one unearned run on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in today’s start. He didn’t pick up a decision though and the went to an equally impressive Scott Koerber, who threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
Jesus Valdez and Kyle Reynolds both had two hits and a run in the 5-4 win. One of Reynolds’ hits was a double.
The Cubs had a really good pitching performance in the first gam of a doubleheader with Vero Beach but then a very poor one in the second game. Joel Santo gave up just one one run on eight hits in five innings and he picked up the win in the first game. Chris Amador had a nice game at the plate. He went one for three with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs in the 5-1 win.
Game two didn’t go nearly as well. Mitch Atkins gave up six runs (just one earned) in 4 1/3 innings and both Cubs relievers gave up runs. The lone run in the 8-1 loss was an RBI by Alberto Garcia.
The Daytona Cubs hammered Brevard County in their season opener. They scored six of their eight runs in the final three frames with Matt Matulia leading the way. He went two for four with a double and three RBIs. Nate Spears scored twice and Tyler Colvin had two hits and a run.
