Dayton lost 4-3 to Lakeland, but Jeff Samardzija put together another decent start for the Cubs. He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Michael Phelps gave up two runs in his two innings of relief and he took the loss.
Mark Reed went two for four with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Robinson Chirinos went three for five with a double and an RBI.
Jeff Samardzija’s start, while not great, wasn’t all that bad. But he took his first loss of the season because Daytona got shut out at the plate. He gave up three runs (just one earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
There’s not much to say about the offense although Robinson Chirinos had a nice game. He went two for three and he stole two bases.
The Cubs had a lot of hitting stars in their 12-4 blowout win over Brevard County but Robinson Chirinos was a notch ahead. He went three for four with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and three runs in the win. Chris Amador singled three times and scored three runs while Jake Muyco and Ryan Norwood each drove in three runs.
Todd Blackford was roughed up for four runs in 4 2/3 innings but he walked away with a no decision. Grant Johnson picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
Jeff Samardzija made his first minor league start of the season and while he was effect, the Cubs still lost. He gave up just one run on five hits and a walk with one strikeout. It’s going to be fun watching this kid move up the chain.
The Cubs racked up just six hits in eleven innings in a pretty pathetic offensive performance. Robinson Chirinos had the only extra base hit with a double and he also scored a run.
